Full Version: Mod Situation

Hey everyone,

lets do this the official way: We need more mods.

Let me explain. As the site gains more and more popularity I think this will become necessary. I know that the crash detection is already pretty dope. But currently (10:25 GMT+1) we're stuck in an exhibition. Again. That is unfortunate since there're regulars online that might use !skip in a proper way. I know it's not easy declaring someone new as mod. There have to be (and I guess there already are) strict rules as to what a mod can and can't and should and shouldn't do. We'd still need one or two more mods for now to have one mod for every 3-4 hour window of the day.

If I had to guess I'd say that it is currently not possible to give someone _just_ the !skip power, or _just_ the !queuesong or whatever. On the other hand I don't know of that's even necessary. The regulars are all grown ups, we're not 20 anymore. All I want to say is: give it a shot. Unmod them if it doesn't work :)

Greetings

EDIT: I just thought of an automated way that might help as well. "Just" check for new entries in the DB every 15-20 minutes. If no new entry was made within that time period, skip the current game, reboot the server, whatever needs to be done.
I agree with sanso that having more mods will eliminate issues like this springing up in the future. It'll just make things more streamlined.
We're a band of vicious pirates
We're sailing out to sea
When you hear our gentle singing
You'll be sure to turn and flee

Edit 2. I'd really like to know if there's an option of giving _just_ skipping rights for these cases.
I'm just gonna say that there's often a lack of mod from ~midnight EST to 3-4 am EST and, I don't know if it's just REALLY back luck or what,
but the last 2 weeks or so we've had like 4-5 freeze that didn't get auto-skipped during that time window.

I completely agree with Sanso on this one. It's incredibly frustrating to have a stream freeze up on the worst possible time (Because let's face it, MUGEN isn't the most stable fighting game in the world) and to be completely powerless to fix it.

I feel that having more mods around would definitely fix this situation. I feel that we have a lot of capable, willing people, and having more people on hand would decrease the likeliness of this kind of thing happening again. Don't get me wrong. The mod team we already have is doing a fantastic job so far, but everyone needs to sleep. Having more mods from different time zones, or at least mods that are on at different times would be super helpful to the health of the stream, and would lighten the load of the existing mods. Especially with the likely increase of viewership we will experience soon, we will need more mods to help manage the crowd.

And like Sanso said, we are all responsible, rule-abiding adults. I strongly believe that none of us are silly enough to abuse mod privileges, and if one of us turns out to be unfit for the job, a quick and civil un-modding can prevent further trouble. I'm sure we can understand.

So please, Erxos, do consider adding more of us to your mod team. A lot of us are evidently passionate about the stream and want to see it succeed. It doesn't have to be a whole lot of people, just enough to cover the gaps in which we don't have any mods on and to lighten the load.
Yeah, the constant presence of a mod, who is informed and and willing to help people would be a big plus if we start dealing with bigger numbers. The influx the other day kinda showed that if the situation was reversed, if we wanted to take care of the channel goers and encourage their involvement in the community (instead of being idle and contribituting to stagnation of the stream), we'd need some more hands to direct them. I think there's a big pool of people who show interest, but never get the right chance to begin, because some streams, not naming any names, are laizzes faire chucklefucks.

Lazy fares.
Lazurus failures.

The problem with a hard freeze like this is that the chatbot also seems to go dead, and with it, all the powers that the mods have to fix things (!restart, !skip etc).

More mods would help but they wouldn't do anything in this particular case until Erxos can find out what causes these and/or give mods a solution to fix it.

honestly just give me remote control to your pc erxos Kappa
The lack of auto-skip on some matches, in particular the ones that end up going awry and freezing for upwards of an hour, tends to be more than just a nuisance as there is no way the match can be skipped other than simply waiting for a moderator (currently) to actually show up which isn't exactly the most reliable method to resolving this situation.

A larger moderator base can help alleviate that freezing issue, as well as helping out in keeping the chat to a certain standard if future greater influxes make things too out of hand or helping out newer users with miscellaneous things.

That's one method that can be done. Another possible method is giving certain users with responsibility the ability to skip matches on command, but provides no extra support if suddenly a random user came around doing things they weren't supposed to do.

(Also, if the bot doesn't want to listen, then Erx would definitely need to resolve that problem when he can)
There's a secondary program running now that checks whether a match has started in the past 15 minutes, and will reboot the runner if it isn't the case.

Additionally, the main problem with giving more people mod commands is just that I'd like to avoid a chat where most people are mods. I really think that there should be enough moderators as-is, I think the real problem is just that it shouldn't be the case that leaving the runner alone for an hour can lead to this, so hopefully that is resolved with this addition.

I'm cool with that as well SeemsGood  As suggested in my OP the main part is that the stream is running....
